When I had a consult call with a then-5-month pregnant mama-to-be, I was eager to help her and her growing family tackle some of the challenges their older Oakland home presented, like a serious lack of closet storage, odd eaves in their attic master bedroom, no garage, and a small (but heavily used!) kitchen. We tapped into her nesting instinct and got some areas in her home more ready for baby!
Small Kitchen Organization
The Struggle
- Not enough storage for food or small appliances
- Counters covered with spices
- Very few overhead cabinets
- Odd corner cabinets
- Not enough work space for the heavily used kitchen.
The Solution:
- Purchase additional food storage cabinet and small kitchen carts to act as counter space.
- Purge old spices and expired canned goods.
- Prioritize what gets left on the counter to maximize the counter as a work space, rather than a storage space.
- Reconfigure the cabinet and drawer contents to group like items together.
- Put their constantly used items in Zone 1, occasionally used items in Zone 2, and infrequent items in Zone 3.
